Like a bear coming out of hibernation, returning to “the wild” (i.e. our offices) will bring about a hunger for familiarity. And, just like those bears, we will be a little skittish, and at least six-feet apart from other humans.

This quarantine, arguably, has changed how we will forever conduct business and live our daily lives. Being located in Atlanta, in the first state to reopen, we have seen the city reemerge from the not-so-metaphorical ashes and pave the path for proper post-COVID protocol.

Drop by drop, person by person, June 1st will be when we start to trickle back into our offices. There are rumors of plastic partitions, talks of staggered arrivals, promises of adequate separation from others, and requirements of diligent sanitation.

As it pertains to the future of our work environments, though, all most of us can really do is continue to be adaptable for the sake of keeping ourselves and our peers safe. In the meantime, the one thing you can control is yourself, and that includes some of the habits you may have developed while in quarantine – some that may not translate over to your normal work schedule. Let’s go through them together!

Waking up earlier

I think everyone in our office is guilty of this one! It’s hard to deny that extra hour of shut-eye when your alarm goes off and you don’t technically need to get up just quite yet.

Remember when you were in grade school and your parents “trained” your sleep schedule? Whether it was an attempt at reclaiming alone-time, or not, they might have been on to something! According to sleep.org, your body has an easier time making sleep adjustments on an incremental basis. The website suggests turning your alarm clock back by fifteen-minutes at a time in order to have you springing out of bed by the time you need to return back to your normal work schedule!

Working out at different times

One of the things that our team really enjoyed with working from home was getting to break a workout routine. Many of us at AquantUs were big fans of playing around with different workout times, but unfortunately, that will soon come to an end. Use this transition period to reacquaint yourself with your typical exercise schedule. Or, if you’ve always wanted to be an early-bird fitness-enthusiast, this would be a great time to train yourself to work out early, while you’re still working from home!

Transition back to your normal lunch schedule

Those hunger-pangs don’t have quite the same effect when you have your entire pantry at your disposal. Getting back into the habit of eating during the times that you would typically eat while at the office is a good idea, in order to keep hunger at bay!

Transition back to your normal work hours

Work-life balance was one of the biggest issues that many faced once their dining rooms became their offices. There’s something just so easy about sitting down for ten-minutes to finish a task at 8PM. While this advice packages all of the other tips together, we believe it deserves a category of its own. Aim to work your normal hours. When the laptop shuts, resist the temptation to open it up again!

 

While we’ve all just been trying our best to do what works best for us during quarantine, knowing that we’re all going to be reunited soon makes it easier to get back into our normal routine. Onboarding Like a Pro, Hiring Manager Edition!

Virtual backgrounds? Online introductions? Cutting through the awkwardness of knowing a new employee through a computer?

You thought you’d at least have some training before having to do this.

Sure, there has been talk floating around the rumor mill for a couple of years now about working from home, but as somebody in a hiring position, you never thought your job would be taken totally remote.

Virtual interviews certainly aren’t a new concept, but onboarding? Now that, that’s something you don’t have experience with.  Afterall, there are still so many things rooted in physical presence when onboarding a new person. Handshakes have been replaced with waves and elbow bumps (P.S. do you know why we shake hands when we meet someone?!), physical signatures have gone digital, and equipment is now being shipped through the mail to its rightful new owner.

While COVID has disrupted our normalcy and forced us to change our patterns and our daily lives, it comes with a certain kind of comfort – one that we tend to seek, knowingly, or not – a sense of understanding and patience with our peers, our loved-ones, our colleagues. So, while you may feel like Christopher Columbus navigating the unmapped seas, know that there are a thousand ships backing you up – one of which, is AquantUs (hey, we don’t have the word Aqua in our name for no reason!).

Being the liaison between candidate and hiring manager for some time now (and having onboarded multiple employees 100% remotely), we’re quite familiar with getting to know somebody through some sort of digital channel. Keep reading to learn how you, too, can become a pro!

  1. Over communicate

Right now, there’s no such thing as talking too much. As a new employee, it’s already nerve-wracking enough to start a new job, meet new people, learn about your boss – but to do that over a screen (?!) that takes it to a whole ‘nother level!

By opening the doors to communication, you are showing your new hire that yes, you understand, and yes, it’s okay to ring when they have a question. This will iron out any first-week kinks and awkwardness and open the door to communication.

  1. Hit the record button

Consider taking some time to create a virtual training, orientation, and onboarding program. Platforms such as Zoom and BombBomb have made it easy to record your screen and add audio to it. By recording yourself walking through programs, timelines, policies, etc., you will not only have something for your new employees to reference, should they need it, but you’ll also have it for future employees for when you return to the office! (Saving time for Future You!)

  1. Create a detailed plan, but know when to slow it down

I don’t need to say it because we know you’ve heard it a thousand times: we’re living in unprecedented times. Everything has come to a standstill and we’re all trying to do many jobs at once by taking care of the kids, working alongside our housemates, etc.

A little bit of understanding will go a long way here. Provide your new employee with a detailed plan, but know that they may have a lot of other background noise to handle. Luckily since you’ve overcommunicated (right?!) your new employee will feel comfortable sharing their WFH situation and won’t leave you in the dark!

  1. Have a team happy hour

This one is pretty straightforward. Since we’re not in the office, it’s important to go above and beyond to help your new hire feel like a real employee! Consider setting up a team meeting so everybody can get to know the new addition!

  1. Embrace the experience!

Like it or not, at some point, we probably will be working from home much more. Use this time as practice to become an expert at it!

Let’s play a game of ‘what’s more nerve-wracking’, shall we?

  • Meeting your new coworkers vs. meeting your new coworkers via video chat
  • Learning your company’s culture vs. trying to gauge the culture in conference calls
  • Being trusted with company equipment vs. receiving a shipment of your new equipment
  • Learning all of the things in your first week and speaking up when you have questions vs. learning all of the things in your first week and video calling your boss when you have questions

I think the winner is clear.

We’ve all been in that position — we’ve all been the new kid on the block and it’s exhausting having new info fly at you in every direction at 100 MPH. Now, could you imagine having to do all of that through a screen?!

With the onset of COVID-19 and the practice of social distancing, companies have shifted to remote work, whether they were fully-prepared to do so, or not. While this taste of a commute-less life has been welcomed by few and loathed by most (which, hey, if you’re struggling, read our article about how to up your production efforts!), most people haven’t even thought to count their lucky stars that they’re settled into their role at their company and not navigating the treacherous waters of starting a new job remotely.

Now, this isn’t to say that we’re unaware of the tight grip this virus has on our economy, and this isn’t us turning a blind eye to the millions that have been laid off this past month. It is, rather, us acknowledging that, while many are being let-go or furloughed from their jobs, loads more are starting new jobs because, yes, there are companies still hiring (email info@aquantusllc.com if you’d like to receive a copy of our jobs listing).

So, if you’re one of the ones that is starting a new job during this pandemic, let us be your resource to help you maneuver through the unfamiliarity of remote work, new job edition!

 

Establish who you will be reporting to and any direct reports you will have

You’ve probably already received this information, but it never hurts to double check! Since this will be your closest-knit group in the company, it’s best to familiarize yourself with them ASAP. In fact, it could even be beneficial to do a little sleuthing and see if there are any personal connections you can make with them since you’ll be lacking human-to-human contact.

Try to schedule a meeting with your ‘inner’ work ‘circle’ before your first day or sometime within the first week

This ties directly into the first bullet point. If possible, see if you are able to schedule a meet-and-greet meeting with your ‘inner circle’ either before your start date or very soon after; this will help you get acquainted with everybody!

Create a folder in your inbox for all onboarding documents

It is, admittedly, much harder to stay organized when you don’t have a proper desk, drawers, a file cabinet, etc. Since your boss will most likely be sending all of your documents via email, keep them all filed together in an onboarding folder in your inbox.

Verify that your internet is able to withstand high-broadband tasks

This is probably something you haven’t thought about if you haven’t worked remotely before, but believe us, you’ll be glad you checked after you get going. Double check with your provider that your network is able to handle high-broadband tasks.

Set up your work station

Just as you would do in office, set up a station equipped with a planner, pens, notepads, etc. The more you can recreate a professional working environment, the better your chances for succeeding!

Make a checklist with specific goals and expectations

Of course, your first week will be mostly filled with learning the ropes, but it’s always a good idea to write down your goals and expectations since you won’t have anybody around to check on you. This will help you stay on track and help keep your priorities in-line.

Work from home — we’re all in this together

Here it is, folks – we’re getting a taste of the future. Before the infamous COVID-19 made its debut, workers spoke of a world in which we would all be working remotely. Replying to emails from the comfort of our own sofa has long been romanticized. Our peers with generous work from home policies have been envied. Sign-on packages have been negotiated to include the freedom to break from the shackles of the morning commute, the office desk, the office candy bowl.

Telecommuting is the future, we chanted in droves, as we desperately clung to the hope of a better work-life balance.

Now, we’re longing for our morning commutes, our office desks, our office candy bowl. Now, we’re longing for a taste of normalcy.

Seemingly overnight our reality changed and our self-discipline was put to the test. We got what we wanted, with a caveat. We’re working from home, alright, but now we’re all working from home: kids, spouses, partners, roommates… even the dog is home from daycare. We are piled on-top of each other and doing everything we can to sustain our last ounce of sanity.

We’re faced with the challenges of slowed internet, constant video calls, kids running around the house, blurred work-life balance, and, consequently, reduced productiveness. To help you, we’ve compiled a list of things that are personally helping us stay on top of our work, and, give ourselves a little self-love in the meantime.

Emulate your in-office environment at home

This advice came from a couple of our team-members, so it seems to have the biggest impact of keeping business running as usual. We, as humans, compartmentalize things and your work space is one of those.  Creating a space that is strictly for work will help you switch “work-mode” on and off. Set it up with a second screen, a mouse, pens, notepads, maybe even an essential oil diffuser to create a serene and cheerful area.

Work your normal office hours – yes, shut off your laptop at your normal time – and keep yourself on a schedule. Having a routine and maintaining order is the first step to remaining productive in this trying time.

Get dressed to feel your best

It can be extremely tempting to roll out of bed and work in the clothes that you slept in. What’s the point of changing when nobody is going to see you, right? Not exactly. Much like a designated working area signals your brain to switch gears, changing your clothes can do the same.

According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and featured in this article by CNBC,

“professionals perform better on tasks when wearing clothes with ‘symbolic meaning.’ In the study, they found that doctors were more focused and performed better at work when wearing a lab coat. For a business professional, wearing a nice outfit may boost how you feel about work. Research by Joy V. Peluchette and Katherine Karl found, ‘Respondents felt most authoritative, trustworthy, and competent when wearing formal business attire, but friendliest when wearing casual or business casual attire.’”

Get moving

Another concern that has presented itself with the social isolation movement is mental health wellness, especially for those living alone. That is why it is so important to give yourself time out of your day to move – take a walk around the block, stream one of the hundreds of fitness classes that are being offered by local studios (many of which are free and you can find here!), or maybe even take a drive around your community.

If you are accustomed to a doing a lot of things outside of your home, surrounded by many people, isolation can feel like a prison. It is so vital to keep your body moving in order to keep your mind clear!

Use this time to practice self-care

This is a fun one! When we have a “normal” schedule outside, we often let self-care fall to the side. This is a great time to paint on a face mask, wear warm socks, and to give your eyes a break by going a couple of days without wearing your contacts!

Get busy in the kitchen

Continuing with the theme of not doing things because we simply don’t have enough time, use isolation as a way to treat yourself to some home cooked meals! Doing something that you normally don’t have time to do will give you something to look forward to and sharpen your creativity – leading to a sense of accomplishment!

Since you’re the boss through this whole process, you tell us which opportunities you would like us to submit you to. Remember: take what you want, leave what you don’t. After filling out a quick consent form (so you know where your resume is at all times), we’ll send your resume straight to the hiring manager (!!!). Do we need to repeat that? Your resume goes straight to the hiring manager.

If you are selected for an interview, we’ll hook you up with an interview preparation package that is tailored to that specific role and company. Think: fraternity/sorority house test bank. Also, we’ll do an interview prep with you so you don’t have to practice by yourself in a mirror. After your interview, we’ll have a little chat to ensure that no surprises arose and we’ll relay any feedback that we received from the client.

So You Want a New Job. Where Do You Start?

The days are long, but the years are short, they say.

It feels like yesterday when you started your journey at your company. It has been good to you – and the two of you have grown, together – but it’s time for you to go your separate ways. Maybe you’d like a more flexible schedule. Maybe you’d like to expand your skill set. Maybe you’re just ready for something new. Whatever the reason, you’ve decided that it’s time to part from the company that defined your career – the company that made you, even. Despite the booming job market, getting a new job is daunting, at best, and a total-freaking-letdown, at worst. Fortunately, we want to assist you in your quest. After all, it takes a village.

Lock it up.

Much of the job-hunting process can feel like it’s out of your control. Application after application: you submit your resume into the abyss of the internet with little-to-no response. Discouraging. In this case, it isn’t them, it is you. Competition is fierce and it’s easier than ever to get eliminated from a batch of potentials, no matter your experience. First line of order is to clean 👏 up 👏 your 👏 social 👏 media 👏. Stalk yourself on the internet. Follow your social media timelines back a couple of years. Do you have a video of you complaining about being bored at work? Delete it. And yes. We’ve seen it. We’ve seen it all.

Next, dig up your resume, dust it off, and give it some TLC.

This one might sound simple, but, again, we’ve seen it all. Any and all job duties performed in the past should be referred to in the past tense. On the contrary, any job duties that are performed at your current job should be reflected in the present tense. See example below:

XYZ Company, Atlanta, GA
Marketing Analyst

  • Design and create company eblasts
  • Schedule and manage video campaigns
  • Write for the Company’s blog

 

ABC Company, Atlanta, GA
Social Media Strategist

  • Managed seven high-profile social media accounts
  • Scheduled and coordinated photoshoots amongst influencers and clients

 

Now, make sure everything is consistent. Want to cap-off your bullet points with periods? Cool. Do it. Want to leave them free and open-ended? Cool. You can do that too. HOWEVER. Whichever route you choose, choose to stick with it. If you want to add periods, make sure there are periods on every single bullet point. This should get you started — be on the look out for a future blog with explicit resume instructions. Now onto networking.

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

This isn’t news, so we won’t spend much time on it. If you’ve been at the same company for years then it might be time to refresh your network. Expand your reach. Attend networking events. Connect with your school’s alumni. Tell everybody you know what kind of work you do and that you’re looking for a job. News spreads like wildfire and most people are willing to help if they can.

Should You Consider Contract Work?

Your eyes shift from your computer screen to your office window in desperation of a little sunshine pick-me-up. Winter has peaked and you’re experiencing day 5 of gray clouds with a mix of dreary drizzles. It’s times like this when your body starts to crave a two-week vacation in Mexico.

Reality comes knocking at your front door when you check your remaining PTO days. Four days left.

You love your job, sure, but the hours are demanding and it has little work-life balance. You’ve missed happy hours, weddings, recitals, soccer games, and it might just be time for a change. That change, called contract work, might be easier than you think.

If you read our most recent post, you know that hiring a contract employee can be beneficial to companies. However, as a contract employee, you are also entitled to a myriad of perks. While we mostly hear of people transitioning to contract work because of the flexibility in scheduling, there are many other perks to working as a contract employee:

  1. Higher per-hour rate
  2. Getting “your foot in the door”
  3. Expand your skill set

Higher per-hour rate

Imagine a world where you don’t have to sit across from your boss and brag about yourself then awkwardly ask for a raise. As a contractor, you can generally demand a higher per-hour rate. Why? Because, according to this article, companies “don’t have to enter into expensive, long-term commitments or pay health benefits, unemployment compensation, Social Security taxes, and Medicare taxes.”

The downside? You will be responsible for withholding your own taxes, as well as submit quarterly estimated taxes to the IRS. However, as the qualified and talented financers and accountants you all are, you might enjoy doing that. Unlikely, but possible.

Getting “your foot in the door”

I know this is an article about why you should consider contract work, but we can’t ignore the fact that sometimes you would just kill to work permanently at your dream company. Unfortunately, a lot of people would also kill to work there. In this case, your answer to getting a full-time position at said company might be to do some contract work for them.

If you’ve ever looked behind the scenes of the hiring process you know that it’s involved. By involved, we mean, EVERYBODY has to come together to find the right person AND package up their offer. That’s right, legal, finance, HR, hiring managers, etc. all have to come to agreement.

Sometimes, work just needs to get done and there isn’t any time to argue consult with every department of the company. Hiring managers can typically bypass all of the noise by hiring a contract employee. By the end of your contract, there might be a new hiring budget, or hey, you might’ve just blown the socks off of everyone and they want to bring you on full-time. Either way, there’s always potential for a temporary position to turn into a permanent one.

Expand your skill set

Often, when you get into a permanent role your professional growth plateaus as you utilize the same systems, work alongside the same people, and perform the same tasks day-in and day-out for years. Contract work offers you the opportunity to expand your skill set by challenging you to learn new software systems, work with new people, and solve a different set of problems that come with different companies.

A key component of our job is to examine your resume before we send it off to a company. Contract employees have, on average, a resume that is two pages longer and more variable than the typical traditional employee.

Hiring a Contractor — What Does That Mean For You?!

If you’ve read our most recent newsletter (which you can request at info@aquantusllc.com if you haven’t received it!), you saw the big news — AquantUs is expanding into contract recruiting! What does this mean for YOU? It means that we want to be your one-stop-shop – the people that can solve ALL of your problems.

If you’re new to this contract recruiting thing, grab a chair and cozy up, because we’re going to get into the nitty-gritty details of the advantages of hiring a contract employee.

They say the devil is in the details, and that’s very much the case with contractors vs. direct hire employees. You see, a lot of employers shy away from hiring a short-term employee because, well, the hiring process as a whole is daunting and exhausting. However, that isn’t the case with contractors! In fact, their hiring turn-around is MUCH quicker and MUCH easier! It’s so favorable, in some cases, that, according to this article by CNBC,

 “Google, Facebook, Amazon, Uber and other Silicon Valley tech titans now employ thousands of contract workers to do a host of functions… This year at Google, contract workers outnumbered direct employees for the first time in the company’s 20-year history.”

So, why exactly are companies opting for contract workers? Well, for one, the turn-around time is fast. Contractors can be in an office working in as little as a week because their contracts oftentimes don’t have to undergo the same legal scrutiny and budget approval as a permanent employee’s. That means you can immediately reduce your team’s workload. Since these guys and gals have lots of experience in lots of different companies, they tend bring a plethora of skills to the table. As a result, they can get in and get the job done with little to no training. They can help you meet year-end and quarterly deadlines, accelerate special projects, cover employee leaves of absence, etc. from day one!

That in itself should be enough convincing, but if it’s not, let’s talk money! Yes, contractors generally demand more per hour than their permanent counterparts, but you can actually save money by opting to hire short-term.
